Kitesurfing on Boracay Island

Kitesurfing is one of the less popular extreme sports practised in the world, but definitely not because it is any less fun to do. Kitesurfing is a relatively new sport, which only began to be developed in the 1990s, eventually becoming recognised as the form practised today around 1998. It is carried out on a bi-directional board similar to a wake-board, with inflatable tube kites (for easy re-launching from the water) providing the propulsion. It is a rapidly growing sport that is easy to learn but difficult to master.

Boracay island is one of the 7,107 islands which form up the archipelago of the Philippines. It is only 7 kilometres long and as narrow as 1 kilometre wide at its narrowest, but is nevertheless a spectacular place. It has 30 beautiful, white sandy beaches, including the 4 kilometre long White Beach that is famous around the world. Boracay is definitely one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines, and is the only place to kitesurf in the country. It is also one of only a handful of kitesurfing locations in the whole of Asia. Compared to most kitesurfing locations, Boracay is a paradise. Certainly, learning the sport here, where mean sea temperatures rarely fall below 27 degrees celsius, has its advantages over learning in Poole, in the UK, where mean sea temperatures could make a grown man cringe.

Both Boracay and kitesurfing could make any trip memorable, so kitesurfing in Boracay is bound to be an experience to remember. It will certainly make for some interesting additions to the photo album.
