Is this the best sand in the world?

We’ve all seen those white, sandy beaches in films and on television, where the water is a crystal clear light blue, and palm trees mark the beginning of lush green forest. At the same time, most of us have never actually been to anywhere remotely like this. It is an unfortunate fact that in most places sand is the one thing that can spoil an otherwise enjoyable day at the beach. Either it’s dirty, or gritty, or littered with pebbles. You’d be forgiven for thinking that the fine, white sand of the movies is a cinematic deception.

But White Beach, situated on the island of Boracay in the Philippines, has 4 whole kilometres of powdery white sand. Even the name of the island is thought to have been inspired by the beach, ‘borac’ being a local word meaning cotton, a tribute to the sands colour and fineness. The island itself is only 7 kilometres long, and as well as White Beach, there are 29 other beaches and coves packed into this relatively small area.

Understandably, Boracay is a place where people go to relax on the beach, swim in the sea, and generally while the hours away in the beauty of this tropical island. At least by day. By night, Boracay has a lively nightlife ranging from all-night discos to chilled-out acoustic sets in beach cafes. There is a large choice of cuisine available, from traditional Filipino cooking to international food.

Which doesn’t mean more active pursuits are not catered for. Mountain biking, kayaking, and scuba diving are all available. Scuba diving especially is popular, with the Philippines recognised as one of the world’s prime destinations for divers. The other main feature of the island is Mount Luho, from the top of which are afforded outstanding 360-degree views of the whole island and surrounding seas.
