A nice place for a white (beach) wedding

The last decade or so has seen the beach wedding become a popular choice for British couples who are getting married, and who can blame them. Instead of a large wedding in the UK, which inevitably gets very expensive when catering for so many guests, a wedding abroad is often a smaller, more intimate affair, consisting only of the couple’s close family and friends. It can often be cheaper to fly a small group of people to an exotic location than to provide 200 guests with food and wine for a night.

The Philippines is in many ways an ideal location for a beach wedding. The country covers an archipelago of 7,107 islands, set in blue tropical seas. It is a hugely diverse place culturally, geographically, and zoologically, with many species of rare wildlife. The landscape is dramatic, with sandy white beaches giving way to lush forest, rising up into volcanic mountains. Places such as Boracay island and Palawan island are the types of place that can host a beach wedding. They are both popular resorts, with many places to stay, eat, and drink, but also retain a quieter side. A wedding on Boracay, for instance, probably wouldn't take place on the famous 4 kilometre long White Beach; the beauty of Boracay is it has many other small, sandy coves that would be perfect.

When the wedding is over, the Philippines naturally make a fantastic place for the bride and groom to take their honeymoon. Whether they prefer to seek adventure in the depths by scuba diving, trekking up Mayon Volcano, or spending a romantic evening watching the sun set on one of the many idyllic beaches, the choice is theirs. Filipinos are a naturally friendly, welcoming people, and are sure to go out of their way to make sure a honeymooning couple are well looked after.

There are a few things to remember when thinking about choosing the Philippines as a wedding destination. The seasons are split into the dry season, from December to May (the first half known as the ‘cold’ part, the later the ‘hot’. But temperatures are good throughout this period, and rarely rise above 37 degrees Celsius at their peak), and the rainy season, from June to November. The rainy season is also the typhoon season – so if the rain wasn’t enough to put people off, the 20 typhoons which strike each year definitely will.
